Marin asked for help sorting Sariah into a Hogwarts house in time for the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, this weekend, and it made me think about my own kids. Joseph is into everything--jumping on the bed, climbing over anything that sits still, pushing his truck through the mud, giggling madly at silly faces, all that good stuff. He's a lot like Fred and George Weasley, really, so he's Gryffindor all the way. Elena's a little trickier, though. She likes to play the map puzzle on the Build-a-Bear website and knows all of the lower-48 states. She knows their names and even puts them into the right places, and has done it inside the 6 minute time limit at least once, all by herself. That's just one example of what she can do. I'd say Elena's Ravenclaw, but Hermione Granger's Gryffindor, and she's the smartest kid at Hogwarts.
Then I thought about the fact that house sorting often goes in families, so what am I? I'm not ambitious, manipulative or power-hungry enough for Slytherin. I may well be too lazy for Hufflepuff, though hard work and deliberation may not be their only defining characteristics. I'm smart, yes, but I never did that well in school because I'm, well, lazy. So does that mean I'm Gryffindor by default? Am I the Neville Longbottom of the family?
And here is my challenge to you. I want you to *honestly* assess yourself and comment here with what house you think you should be in.
**Update: Upon further reflection, I decided that Ravenclaw wouldn't care if I'm lazy since I still love learning and like having intelligent conversations on weird (esoteric?) subjects. Does that mean I'm a Ravenclaw? I don't know--there's aren't many internet tests sensitive enough. Most have me with Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw neck-and-neck, the lead depending on whether they're testing for ethics, personality or habits, respectively.

I've always felt like I should be in Ravenclaw. I'm not brave enough for Gryffindor, but I'm pretty smart and I like to read and learn new things.
I think Doug's a perfect Hufflepuff, he's def. a hard worker.
And I'm leaning towards putting Sariah in Gryffindor because she's so fearless, but I'm still not sure if that means she's brave, or just unwise.
Reckless and brave often go together. Either way you choose not to let fear hold you back. She'll be good in Gryffindor.
My first thought was that I'd be in Slytherin, but Brent says no way. We looked up a few tests online and 2 out of 3 times I ended up in Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff takes "The lot," so I guess that's the default, not Gryffindor. Hufflepuffs are hardworking, loyal, and honest. I didn't want to be a Hufflepuff, but Cedric's not so bad so I guess it's okay.
Brent knew he'd be in Ravenclaw, and all of his tests put him there. He's pretty witty and clever. We're not worried about sorting our kids until they turn 11, like the wizards do.
hmmm... looks like I'm a Hufflepuff, too. I could be Ravenclaw, it's really close, and it did come up on a couple of them. Lisa was sure I'd be Gryffindor, but that was consistently a distant third. I guess it's true. I am a hard worker (once I actually get around to starting).
What is a good sorting web site?
Ok, I tried 4 different sorting quizzes that Lisa sent me. I got Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw each on one of the two midrange quizzes. Hufflepuff on the short quiz and Hufflepuff by one point over Ravenclaw on the long quiz. I guess I must be Hufflepuff.
By this point, that long one (at 120+ questions it's obnoxiously long) is the only one that sorts me into Hufflepuff, and the purple one that's all about ethics is the only one that sorts me into Gryffindor. All the rest call me Ravenclaw, so I'll take it. Ravenclaw's respectable, people don't snigger if I want to spend my evenings reading, and I don't feel weird for wanting to take a ton of classes just to see what they're about. Besides, it gives Elena a better chance of leaning that way, and I think she'll like it.
